I'm not sure if it was the Mexican beer or the Topo Chico water. So without further delay the list...

1. Tecate - Described by almost every member as evenly carbonated, smooth start to finish with a decent flavor. "Rico Suave with Miller High Life class". This brew is so good it has its own shoe.

2. Dos XX - Beer has great carbonation...think Miller High Life carbonation with tan, oh and stronger smelling. (note no one mentioned skunk and this was in a green bottle.)

3. Modelo - A light start and with a "slightly bitter" finish. Makes you wish all relationships ended with only a "slightly bitter" finish.

4. Pacifico - A stronger tasting Mexican, but no Zorro. Is there a typical Mexican? This is probably it.

5. Sol - No, wait...this is it. The middle of the road Mexican. It reminded Stout of sweet smelling dishwater.

6. Carta Blanca - Super light flavor with a cotton mouth finish. I think this one actually evaporates on your tongue before you even taste it.

7. Corona - A solid beer that smells like a strong Mexican.

8. Caguama - Comments included; smooth, it's not Mexican, flavorful...in a bad way, and strange or strong, I can't decide.

In all we were somewhat surprised by the results. It seemed that all of these beers are very similar in appearance and with the addition of a lime to mask the flavor they probably all taste very similar. However, by themselves they all seemed to have distinct flavors and vary much more than mass market American Lagers.North Texas Beer Panelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06865409236372054300noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5792521187381528001.post-77015911671834869632010-09-23T21:39:00.008-05:002010-09-23T22:09:57.338-05:00Mexican Tasting Tomorrow! COORS LIGHT (1,2,3,3) - 9 pts
2. MILLER LIGHT (1,2,2,5) - 10 pts
3. LONE STAR LIGHT (1,3,4,4) - 12 pts
4. BUD LIGHT (1,3,6,6) - 16 pts
5. MICHELOB LIGHT (2,5,5,6) - 18 pts
6. In fact he might even switch from Bailey's to one of these ales. I have to admit I'm a big fan of Genessee Cream Ale, so it is nice to try an Irish cream ale like Wexford and expand my cream ale experience.

Right off you will notice the darker color of Wexford and the slight smell of malt. It's like passing your nose by a vanilla malt after you have devoured the contents of the glass. The taste is much more complex than Genessee and a little sweeter. Wexford finishes with a bit of a bite unlike Genesse and it may be my imagination but the carbonation seems much finer. The head of the Wexford lingers forever and the Genessee melts away into a very fine layer shortly after the pour.

The whole taste difference can be summed up as a meeting between a new world nephew and his rich old world uncle. Everything about the Wexford has degree of sophistication that scores a couple of points higher on the scale than Genessee. Taste wise, the Genessee is something the average beer drinker is going to like even if they drink Coors all the time. It's not too harsh and it won't break the bank, because it is just a tad more than a sixer of a mainstream lager (Miller light or Budweiser) and just as drinkable. Besides the girls will think your much cooler if you hand them one of these.

Could you drink Genessee and eat a hotdog? Yes. Wexford? You could, but I would have to slap you. The Wexford to me is an excellent dessert beer, or just great by itself. It makes since that this one comes in a four pack and the Genessee in a sixer. Both are great and available at Metzler's in Denton.

H.O.G.North Texas Beer Panelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06865409236372054300noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5792521187381528001.post-27365265193168999712010-04-22T23:09:00.002-05:002010-04-22T23:14:23.427-05:00QUALITY DOMESTIC LIGHT BEER TASTINGwe will be doing "quality"/mainstream light beer tasting on friday, april 23. it was hard to come up with our final beer, but we did it after a nice stroll through goody goody liquor. here's the list:

miller light
bud light
coors light
michelob light
lone star light
rolling rock light

our basis for this test was to have mainstream, american "quality" beer that is over 75 cents a beer.

this tasting will be a bit different from the past ones. we will number 6 cups and pour all beers simultaneously. we feel that we might be forgetting certain tastes and nuances in the first couple of beers as compared to the last couple. we will drink them at will, take notes, and order them as we drink them. this may help us better...it may just let us drink more beer faster!!! who knows, but hopefully it will help out on our rankings. COACH may be joining us...he may not...the dude is getting old and has to clean his house!

i do promise that the results will be up MUCH quicker than the last one. HOG dropped the ball on that one. it WON'T happen again!

HERE'S TO DRINKING!!!!North Texas Beer Panelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06865409236372054300noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5792521187381528001.post-37052067322758084522010-04-19T21:16:00.007-05:002010-04-19T21:40:40.626-05:00Final Results for Cheaper than Water Taste Test

Ever wonder what is the cheapest and best tasting light beer available in North Texas! We did too, so we conducted all the painful research for you. All beers in this test are under 75 cents per can. We use the old blind test taste method with an independent and unbiased pour master. Each can of this liquid gold was poured into a pint glass at a chilly 38 degrees! We apologize that the results took way longer than expected. This was probably due to our intense research and recovery process. There was a tie between the top two contenders, so that meant a more drinking and thinking.
